Transfer Domain Names

Transfer domain names- There are two key reasons for transferring domain names; to transfer a domain name to a new buyer, and to transfer a domain name to a new register. In this transferring domain names tutorial we will discuss both.

When it comes to transfer domain names we know a little about it…okay we know a lot about it. We have experience both ways of transferring domain names and have also been on both sides of the deal when domain names are transferred to a new buyer. After nearly a decade in the web hosting industry we have learned a ton about transferring domain names and want to pass on that information.

The first method of transferring domain names if when domain names are transferred between registrars. There are four main reasons why you would transfer domain names between registrars.

  1. Your domain name has expired and want to move to a new domain name registrar. A lot of times people are offered teaser rates for the first year on domain names and after it expires the rates get jacked up.
  2. Your web hosting plan which included a free domain name has expired and you now need to register your domain name. Many of the best web hosting companies include free domain names with web hosting. BlueHost and FatCow are two of the best that include free domain names.
  3. You were able to find a registrar with cheap domain names but lack good features so you want to move it to a registrar with good domain name hosting features. Maybe you found a domain name promo price that was too good to pass up but the domain host is not the best.
  4. You have multiple domain names registered that are scattered across the board with several domain hosts and now you want to consolidate all of your domain names into one place. This is very common for people that have multiple websites. Having all of your domain names with one domain host allows you to manage them a lot better.

Now that you have seen the four most common reasons why people transfer domain names to a new registrar lets explain the process to you.

  1. Verify or update all the registered information on the domain name. This is done by going to WHOIS or a site that offers WHOIS searches.
  2. Obtain the authentication code from the current registrar. Without this authentication code you can’t transfer your domain names.
  3. Verify that there is no hold on your domain name. Holds may be placed for several reasons but the most common reason is because they are expired.
  4. Do some research on who offers the best domain name hosting and then contact them. You will need to order their services and they provide them the authentication code that your old domain name registrar gave you. Without that authentication code you won’t be able to transfer your domain names.
  5. After purchasing a new domain name hosting plan from the new registrar they will contact the old registrar to confirm that you initiated this process without any interference. It is very possible that your old domain name registrar will contact you to verify that you are the one transferring the domain names. This process can take some time so you need to be patient and make sure that you keep your domain registration up to date.

Once you have been notified that the domain name transfer is complete, you need to make sure that your domain server and all other registration information is correct.

On a side note there is a thing called the 60-day rule that applies to domain name transfers. This is simply a rule that prevents you from transferring domain names until 60 days after a domain name transfer has occurred. The only exception to this is if you transfer the domain name back to the original domain name registrar. This can be very important to people that are thinking of selling their domain names because it can prevent the sales.

The second reason to transfer a domain name is when you want to transfer it to a new buyer. This can happen because you initiated the buyer or they contacted you to see if they could buy your domain name. A lot of times we recommend that when you transfer domain names to a new buyer that you use a domain name broker. This will cost you some money but make it a lot easier to transfer the domain name. Whether or not you use a domain broker here are the basic steps to transferring a domain name to a new buyer.

  • The buyer and seller agree on a price for the domain name. After the price is agreed on, the buyer will either transfer the buyer the payment or transfer money to the domain broker.
  • If there is no domain broker the buyer will transfer the domain name to a registrar for the buyer. If there is a domain broker they will handle the entire process and release any pending funds to the buyer once the deal is complete.
