Selling Your Domain NameSelling Your Domain Name- If you are thinking about selling your domain name, there are some things you should know first. Read this article to learn more about domain name sales and how to sell your domain name. Selling your domain name can make you money. What Is Domain Selling? Since domain names are explicitly registered and registration may be lost, the very concept of selling can be confusing. Another way to think about selling a domain name is this: what is being sold is the exclusive right to register the domain name. This right to register is valuable only inasmuch as the domain name is valuable. While registering any domain name with the same top-level domain (TLD) usually costs the same at a given webhost, the purchase of the right to register the domain name can cost as much as a 6-digit figure or more: I’ve seen one listed at 7 figures. How Are Domains Sold? Both individuals and registrars sell names in the domain aftermarket. Registrars may, for example, offer customers three different options: • backordering a domain name provides you with an alert if the domain name becomes available • pre-release sales take place in the days prior to registration renewal • pending deletion sales take place in the 5 days after a renewal is missed and before the domain name is deleted from the associated registry and becomes available to all comers. If there are multiple requests for a domain name, an auction for those who backordered it may be used to settle the claim. In this case, the bid may include the registration fee. This means that if you don’t sell the domain name that you’re planning to give up, there’s likely somebody else just waiting to make money off that domain name. However, selling means at least a minor investment of time, so if you’re on the fence, it’s a good idea to get some idea of the value of the domain name before you make the preparations to sell it. Evaluating a Domain Name Having your domain name appraised can serve both to give you a better estimate of its value and actually raise its value by providing an independent assessment. Another value of an appraisal is that it tends to convince potential buyers that you are fair and aboveboard. An appraisal reviews a number of factors associated with the performance of domain names. While any appraisal of a domain name is somewhat speculative, it is also fact-based and an appraisal from a reputable dealer is worth having for both domains that may or may not be valuable, as well as for those that are so clearly valuable that the only question is what the asking price or minimum bid at auction should be. Third party domain name brokers How to Sell a Domain Name Individuals have the option of making a private sale, listing the domain name with a third party, or placing the name for auction. Along with obtaining an appraisal, if appropriate, and prior to advertising a domain name for sale in any venue, you should check the WHOIS Lookup to make sure that all the data is accurate in the domain name registration. Then you can use any of these methods to seek a buyer: • use the site to sell the site- some registrars offer a variation on a parked domain that allow you to have a free page to post a "for sale" sign; • use another site you own to sell the site by placing an ad and contact information on one or more of your other websites; • list the domain name with a third party seller, also known as a broker. Such a service may offer a variety of benefits. In addition to appraisal, an escrow service may be offered to assure safe exchange of property and funds. • offer the domain name for sale through an auction site. These sites may also offer domain names for sale, as well as accepting bids for the site. Either a third party seller or an auction site, as well as the escrow services that they employ may help in ensuring a smooth transaction, as well as obtain a better price than you would obtain on your own, partly through their ability to reach a wider range of potential buyers. There is a commission involved, generally figured as a percentage of the sale price. Related Article: What is Domain Parking >>
